Heads Up Racing Format with Livetime

On December 28th 2018, 46RC ran a race at Critters which we call our Annual “2nd Annual – High Steaks Club Race”. A friend of the track is a Meat distributor and donates huge cuts of Meat (steaks etc) to the event. So we make the event into something special and fun, as it falls around the holidays.

The idea behind the race came from a Video blog Zach Rogers did on Facebook Live. The original video is posted here. (You’ll probably need a Facebook account to access it.)

After emailing and discussing the format with Zach, we came up with an adapted format for a club race. The format is as follows:

  1. One 5-min IFMAR style round of qualifying.
  2. Next we setup the Mains. Double Mains for all racers. Your result is based on your combined score from both mains.
  3. We bump up 2 drivers from each lower main (again based on your combined score from that lower mains).

Best part is it didn’t really extend the evening beyond when we usual finish. 11 heats of qualifying, turned into 22 Mains. (which normally would have been 11 x 2 of Qualifying, and 11 Mains).

So for Critters which usually takes 7 cars directly to the A-mains, B-mains etc. We took just 6, leaving 2 spots open for bumps.

So for a large class, for instance on our event, we had 19 x 4WD Mod Buggies. So that resulted into an A-main (6 cars), B-main (6 cars) and C-main (7 cars).

So in this case, the C-main guys had 2 chances to make one of 2 bump up spots, to get to the B-main. And so on.

The event was a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed the format. It wasn’t too confusing, unlike other Heads Up attempts I have tried (When you do points based heads up; racers find it hard to break out of the mentality of IFMAR qualifying).

You can view the event and results format here: High Steaks Club Race 2018

Lastly, I made this video to explain it, and how to set it up using LiveTime.
